>Traveling for sure! In between the ligns means the experiences I have while being in a new place, being exposed to new culture, language and people. The best thing in the world.

An interview with Superyacht Nanny Arielle Maia
• Where do you come from? Annapolis, MD, USA
• What do you do in your spare time? I love anything that keeps me active. Lately I’ve gotten really into boxing since we’ve had a few months on land and I joined a recreational league softball team as well which has been a blast.
• What makes you laugh? Everything. I can find something funny in almost everything but in particular, when you get my best friends and I together, we turn anything into comedy.
• What would you like to be doing five years from now?
I’d love to be in the travel/hospitality industry in some capacity still. I’ve given some thought lately to hotel management work so I think I’d love to be doing something like that.
• Where would be your favourite holiday destination and why? That’s a hard one. I’ve always wanted to see the islands in Greece and the pyramids in Egypt but everywhere I’ve been in Europe makes my heart happy so I’d always go back there in a heartbeat. Can’t beat good bread and cheese with a view.
• Where do like to shop?
My favorite stores are Zara, Aritzia and Madewell/J.crew but I probably spend a majority of my money at funky health food stores because I love trying new health foods and trends.
• What inspires you?
This one is really hard but I would probably say traveling. Every time I find myself in a new place I feel invigorated. I get a high from new sights and experiences and it makes me look at the world with new eyes every time. I wish more people felt that way; I think it would do a lot of good for society as a whole and would help to alleviate many of the misconceptions and conflict around the world.
• How long have you worked in the super yacht industry?
I got my STCW in fall 2010 but I didn’t start officially working until a year later, so three years now.
• What are your biggest accomplishments?
Finishing university and discovering my independence.
• Can you work under pressure?
I think I work better under pressure. I love to be busy and I am usually good at compartmentalizing and keeping a level head so that helps.
• What is the most difficult situation you have faced?
Having to accept my own flaws and limitations. This kind of covers a lot but sometimes we forget that we are human and have different strengths and weaknesses and instead of berating ourselves for weaknesses, we should work to promote our strengths. Without delving too far into it, learning to love myself for who and what I am was a big challenge for many years.
• What are your pet hates?
I can’t stand passive aggression.
• Tell me about the last time you felt anger on the job?
I’m not really one to get angry but I think a lot of people can relate to the “shipyarditis” that incurs during a yard period. It can feel stifling to be stuck in one place and it’s definitely no fun when it stretches out longer than originally estimated so you have to actively try and make the best of it so as not to turn into a miserable person.
• What do you enjoy most about your job?
I love our sense of family. We have a small crew (only 6 of us onboard, including the Captain’s son) and we’ve all been onboard since the yacht was launched. It’s nice to have that when you are so far removed from your actual family and friends back home. Obviously, the travel is pretty great too.
• Can you recommend a service or a product that may be helpful to Super yacht Stewardesses?
To be perfectly honest, I’m having a hard time wracking my brain since the boat has been in the shipyard for months now and I’ve been living apart from it but all I can think of is the distinct smell of the tea tree oil cleaner our stewardess uses periodically to clean the vents. It’s usually extremely potent but now the idea of it is making me kind of nostalgic for it…
• If there is just one piece of advice that you could give to our fellow stewardesses/nanny’s, what would it be?
Take each day one at a time but always be prepared. There’s no sense in stressing over what is or what is not to come so all you can do is give your best every day and to go to sleep knowing that fact.
Introducing: Little Mermaid at Sea
• Can you please tell us about Little Mermaid At Sea?
Little Mermaid At Sea actually was born over farewell dinner with a couple of my best friends. It was meant to be a simple blog to keep friends and family at home in touch with what was going on in my life onboard a private yacht and the ensuing travels but it quickly evolved into a much bigger endeavor after receiving a lot of outside interest. Now I write about almost anything relating to life onboard, travel related topics, and of course, all the intricacies of being a nanny onboard a private yacht.
• When did you develop a passion for travel?
My dad was in the US Navy and we were stationed in Naples, Italy for the first few years of my early childhood and ever since then, I’ve always been saving up for some upcoming trip.
• What type of reading do you do on a daily basis?
I have a few blogs I keep up with (mostly travel related) but I also try to get a bit of news and keep up with recent events since sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the yacht bubble. Other than that, I’ve been reading a few biographies and autobiographies lately. I find people and all their interpretations and experiences relating to life so fascinating.
• If you could go back and change something related to your education (or your life as a student), what would you change; or what would you do differently?
I always planned to study abroad in France and due to some extenuating circumstances, it wasn’t a possibility. I wish there was some way I could have made that happen, but I still studied french all through university and I plan on living there at some point to study at La Sorbonne.
• What is the strangest thing that you have seen in your travels?
Every now and then I write an installment on the blog titled “Fun Fashion Friday” and I cover strange or noteworthy fashion trends I find around the world. The one that’s gotten the most attention, which happens to be the one that I found most strange, was about the prevalence of couples wearing matching outfits in many Asian countries. In fact, I even saw a couple wearing a matching swimsuit set while I was in Hawaii. I couldn’t believe they were actually sold in stores.
• Finally, if you could offer just one “travel tip” what would it be and why?
Don’t over plan. Some of my best memories and experiences have come from simply wandering around a place and seeing where the day takes me. You never know what hidden gems you’ll find when you stray away from the guidebooks!

What Makes A Good Leader – Chief Stewardess?
There are many definitions of a leader but they all imply particular characteristics. A leader has to be one that oversees and is accountable and responsible for the general execution of particular works or ideas. Leadership is learned and not automatically bestowed upon a person by the creator. As any other talent, skill or ability, it has to be nurtured through discipline to realize the mighty and powerful aura that seem to encompass a leader. There are diverse sectors of the hospitality industries within the service industry. They cut across the tourism industry, transportation, leisure, event planning, hotels and restaurants, and accommodation (lodging).
Aug 29, 2014 | The Superyacht Stewardess |
What is your star sign? Capricorn
Where do you come from? Born in Bendigo, Australia, and then studied in Brisbane.
How long have you worked in the super yacht industry? Since April 2005, which includes taking off for just over a year to live in the French Alps to study French
What are your biggest accomplishments? Setting up the interior of a 44m new build whilst doing weekend trips on the owner’s other yacht was a big challenge and I enjoyed every moment of it!
Can you work under pressure? From sailing, yacht racing, to having to learn to drive a 33ft tender on charter, to preparing elaborate theme nights at the last minute and cooking for 65 people single handedly, I have definitely learned how to work under pressure in this profession!
What is the most difficult situation you have faced? Leading a deck team on a 42m with very little prior experience was quite tough but it forced me to learn quickly, and then my first time as chief stewardess, I needed to overcome a lot of self-doubt, especially as my 2nd stew was brilliant in service having been trained at Michelin star restaurants. I am very grateful for how much I learned with her, and the best thing about the experience is that it made me very determined to master all facets of service which is why I am excited to be doing some advanced wine, service and bartending training in the coming months on a 60m.
What are your pet hates? Negativity and being disorganised or living in clutter! My belief is that everything is ‘figueoutable‘. Either be proactive and change the situation or change the way you feel about it. I also believe a cluttered or disorganised environment creates mental clutter and stress. Keep everything neat, tidy and in its place, plan ahead for different scenarios and have systems in place to keep your life streamlined and simple.
Tell me about the last time you felt anger on the job – it was more frustration than anger, and it was when we could have been much more prepared but weren’t. I think of every day as an interview, and you really have to be on your game and be ready for anything. I like brainstorming all the possible requests or scenarios in advance so you can be sure to deliver that ‘wow’ factor, and not just be good, but be extraordinary and be remembered!
What do you do in your spare time? Now we have some time in the yard, I am loving going to the gym and Crossfit, beach volleyball, getting out to explore, and I especially love getting to meet new people. Everyone is so friendly in the Bahamas!
What makes you laugh? I laugh all the time, especially at myself! I have a strict Life=LSD policy (laughing, singing, dancing that is!) and so I especially don’t take myself too seriously. Whether it’s a silly movie, attempting to motivate the crew to learn a new dance or laughing because I just got soaked in the master shower whilst attempting to detail it…. It also helps when you have a great crew with a good sense of humour. In this regard, I am very lucky as we make each other laugh all the time!
What would you like to be doing five years from now? My ideal position would be a purser on rotation on a 100m+, and I am also very passionate about nature, wellness and retreats so it would be wonderful to be able to build a small Eco sanctuary and start organising retreats there.
Where would be your favourite holiday destination and why? My favourite holiday was in Thailand, doing a yoga and rock climbing retreat. With the beautiful scenery, simple accommodation the fresh food and all that exercise and yoga, I think it’s the best I’ve ever felt!
Where do you like to shop? I love exploring little boutiques and any store where they have unique, handmade pieces. This could be clothing and accessories or for the home or yacht. For the basics, I can’t go past places like H&M and IKEA, and then I love to add flair with some unique statement pieces.
Can you recommend a service or a product that may be helpful to Super yacht Stewardesses? The Stewardess Bible! But really, this is a service and resource that the industry has needed for decades and I wish I had have had this when I first started out. I was seriously clueless about the industry!
What do you enjoy most about your job? That I get to make people happy, I get to be creative and learn every day and I love my crew and meeting new people. I’ve also been to places I would never have thought to have visited, and with yachting, you never know where you could end up next which keeps it exciting!
What specific training was required to obtain this job? As I started yachting back in 2005, I gained a lot of experience on the job. I also completed an in depth interior management course earlier this year with my excellent mentor and first chief stewardess Carolyn Clark. With her 15 years of experience and exceptional organisation skills it was the best course I’ve ever done. I’m also looking forward to an upcoming advanced wine, bar tending and service course that I will complete in the coming months.
Can you tell me some vocabulary or terminology specific to your job? At the moment the buzzword on our yacht is “IDEA”. Basically, it’s a database program where you can add all the vessel’s inventory, spare parts, photographs, storage locations, shopping lists, scheduled maintenance etc. all into one location. So we are all very busy learning how to use it and getting everything up to date.
What type of reading do you do on a daily basis? I love anything uplifting and inspiring, this is a daily must for me, even if it is just simple quotes I receive in my inbox everyday.
If you could go back and change something related to your education or your life as a student what would you change or what would you do differently? Fully embrace the present, and get the most out of every situation instead of wishing I was somewhere else. I did this through my finance and accounting degree and even when I was studying French, always wishing it was finished or that I was already fluent, instead of enjoying the learning process.
What inspires you? Seeing people bring pride and passion into their work and inspiring others. Knowing that I have brightened up someone’s day, whether it was just to smile or having created something really special for them.

Apr 16, 2014 | Interior Crew Interviews, The Chief Stewardess, The Superyacht Stewardess |
The Stewardess Bible chats with Katija Kipre.
This beautiful Chief Stewardess has a passion for travel, with a healthy dose of experience to back up her yachting career.

What is your star sign? – Gemini, bubbly and smiley person 🙂
Where do you come from? – I come from Cavtat.
A lovely little fishermen town near Dubrovnik, where I have worked in the wine bar and met some great crews and yacht owners and one of them gave me my first yacht job.
Where do you call home these days? – Cavtat has and will always be my home, but I currently live in Palma with my fiancé.
What was your last job and what did you like/dislike about it: Chief stew on 40 m, a lot of work and a demanding owner.
- Likes – an opportunity to meet new people and expanding knowledge,
- Dislikes – guests’ ingratitude
What are your biggest accomplishments? – My greatest accomplishment is being exactly who I am today; healthy and smiley sister, daughter, fiancé, aunt and friend.
Can you work under pressure? – This is my favourite type 🙂
When you work under pressure, you can see the best that you are capable of and if you are on the right place. Time flies and you simply do what needs to be done 🙂
What is the most difficult situation you have faced? – Losing someone you love.
What are your pet hates? – I hate lies and pretending
Tell me about the last time you felt anger on the job – Last job, after training a stew for two months. Giving 150% to the job and her training, she left in the middle of the season and there I was all alone…

What do you do in your spare time? – My passion is yoga, writing my diary and travelling.
What makes you laugh? – Friends, my brother’s children (they always find a way to make me laugh regardless of where I am).
What would you like to be doing five years from now? – I would like to start my own business and spend as much time as possible with my family.
Where would be your favourite holiday destination and why? – Thailand, the land of smiles. It is perfect and makes you realize how little you need for happiness.
Where do like to shop? – Wherever I find things I like! 🙂

Can you recommend a service or a product that may be helpful to Super yacht Stewardesses? – My favourite one is a Hagerty flatware, silver dip and the best one and a must have is Murphy soap for a wood.
What specific training was required to obtain this job? – You are for the job, or you aren’t.
Even with the training it is all very logical. I have a medical care on board slip and in my opinion, every stew should have it! Regardless of the training you have the most helpful things are general knowledge and a smile 🙂
It is a great job, but it brings a completely different lifestyle and you need to make changes and be ready for them.
What type of reading do you do on a daily basis? – Always peak into stew bible, and lately after I got engaged, I read a lot of wedding magazines! I’m getting married in October next year, and it needs to be perfect! 🙂
If you could go back and change something related to your education or your life as a student what would you change or what would you do differently? – I would be different in high school, I wouldn’t allow myself to lose a year, then it seemed cool, but it wasn’t, but hey, it’s all part of the life and it was definitely a good lesson
What inspires you? – I have always been inspired by the advices and wisdoms from my late grandmother, she has and will always be my Yoda.

The Stewardess Bible would like to thank Katija for the interview. We wish her well with her job hunt and lots sunshine on her wedding day :).
